Westport Week 8-Goodbye!

During our last week at Westport, Lina joined Ioana in the finish carpentry crew, while Maggie stayed in the plumbing crew. Ioana and Lina worked together on assembling grids for overhead panels. Maggie continued to install piping systems in the 40-meter model.

The three of us handed out our homemade cookies on Monday, and were glad to hear that everyone enjoyed them!

On Tuesday, the day that Maggie and Ioana were to leave for their long drive back to Webb, Westport experienced an extremely unusual event: snow!

During lunch, Maggie and Ioana said goodbye and began their trip. Lina was left to work the rest of the week alone before her flight back to New York. She continued to work on the carpentry project, and was really proud of how much she was able to accomplish on her own.

A couple of days into the week, Lina developed an allergic reaction at work. A few members of the staff noticed and took her to urgent care, where the doctor recommended finishing work early. Lina spent half of Thursday and all of Friday watching the house's extensive collection of movies on VHS tapes and DVDs.

On Saturday morning, Lina left Westport for her flight back to New York. Tana James drove her to Portland (thanks Tana!) where she had a few hours to wander around.

Lina couldn't help herself and went to a record store

Staying true to our previous Portland visit (read "Westport Week 4 and Portland"!), Lina refused to leave without getting her ear pierced yet again. She headed back to Adorn Body Art, where the super-awesome Brit provided her services one more time.

Thanks to Brit and Adorn for doing such a good job!

As Lina enjoyed the last few days in Westport by herself, Maggie and Ioana embarked on their cross-country trip back to Webb. Unlike their first drive, their return trip would take a much more northern route. Overall, they passed through twelve states, making nightly stops in Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, and Indiana. Along the way they experienced many adventures, like getting stuck in the snow and having to floor the gas to move the car up a hill, as well as getting whited out by several trucks during a snowstorm.

Since our winter work term has come to an end, this is our last blog post. Thanks to everyone for reading it! We really enjoyed writing these weekly posts.

The three of us want to thank everyone at Westport, LLC, for being such great mentors, coworkers, and friends. This was an experience unlike any we've ever had, and one that we will never forget!

Westport Week 2 and Port Angeles

Our second week of working at Westport, LLC, with the exception of one minor disaster, went smoothly. Ioana and Maggie continued to work with the electrical crew, installing lights, switches, and other appliances throughout the near-completed yacht. Lina also stuck with the plumbing crew, fitting pipes and water lines for HVAC systems and windshield wipers. On Friday morning, work was going as planned, until we heard an announcement over the intercom. A temporary lamp caught fire on one of the yachts, and the yard had to evacuate. Everyone remained calm, and we were back to work within half an hour. The yacht was flooded and drained, and there was no work done on it for the rest of the day. After work on Friday, we packed up for a weekend trip to see Alex Koziol and Sean Healy, two classmates who are currently working at Westport's Port Angeles location. We arrived after a three-and-a-half-hour drive to a precarious sleeping situation. Maggie made the best of it. Th

Westport Week 6 and Seattle (Again)

Our winter work term is almost over! Ioana, Lina, and Maggie worked the sixth week at Westport in plumbing, mechanical, and fairing, respectively. Dauntless, the 112-foot model that launched the week before, was docked at Westport's outfitting pier while crews continued to add finishing touches. Ioana cleaned and prepped the air handlers and the hot tub, before moving on to multiple projects on the 40-meter model. Lina took a break from cutting insulation on the next 112-foot boat to help fix the exhaust pipe and clean the engine room of Dauntless. Afterwards, she worked on installing a fire-extinguishing pipe in the 38-meter model. Maggie worked on sanding storage units and cabinets for the 38-meter boat. On Friday, we got a tour of Dauntless in its final stages. Before we boarded, we walked to the end of the dock to see the lounging sea lions up close. Even though most of the interior was covered by protective tape, the completed boat was still impressive to
